Oakland fires manager Bob Geren amid nine-game slide, Bob Melvin to take over on interim basis

Oakland manager Bob Geren has a losing record (334-376) in his four-plus seasons with the A’s.

The Oakland Athletics have fired manager Bob Geren after four-plus years at the helm of the club.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that former Diamondbacks skipper Bob Melvin will take over as manager on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. The organization will introduce Melvin prior to the team’s game against the White Sox in Chicago later Thursday.
Geren, 49, had a 334-376 record in his time in Oakland, and his team – despite its vaunted pitching staff – was mired in a nine-game losing streak and sitting in last place in the AL West with a 27-36 record at the time of his firing.

Letting go of Geren had to be rough for A’s general manager Billy Beane on a personal level; the News reports that Beane was the best man at Geren’s wedding.

Geren is the first manager to be canned this season.
