Bay Bridge en Labor Day

Master piece!

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge becomes a ghost town Thursday evening, Sept. 3, 2009, after Caltrans began their four-day closure allowing work crews to remove a 300-yard section of the eastern span and replace it with a detour connector. (Karl Mondon/Staff)

At the highly publicized 8 p.m. closure time, California Highway Patrol officers blocked off freeway approaches leading to the bridge, shutting down Interstate 80 between Oakland and San Francisco until 5 a.m. Tuesday. Meanwhile, highly specialized construction crews began slicing into the 3,300-ton bridge section that will be rolled out sometime Friday and then replaced by a new section to be slid in on giant rails. Caltrans is installing the new bridge section needed to create a detour so contractors have space to build part of the new Bay Bridge East Span, a $6.2 billion, seismically stronger replacement for the existing East Span.

Photograph taken October 17, 1989 just 2 or 3 minutes after a 7.1 earthquake. Baseball fans in attendance at this point were still standing and looking around and surveying the damage. World Series Game 3 between the Giants and Athletics was not replayed until two weeks later, Oakland swept the series 4-0. There was only minor damage to the stadium, however extensive damage occured throughout the SF Bay Area.

Labor Day dus:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 7 in 2009).

The holiday originated in Canada out of labor disputes (“Nine-Hour Movement”) first in Hamilton, then in Toronto, Canada in the 1870s, which resulted in a Trade Union Act which legalized and protected union activity in 1872 in Canada. The parades held in support of the Nine-Hour Movement and the printers’ strike led to an annual celebration in Canada. In 1882, American labor leader Peter J. McGuire witnessed one of these labor festivals in Toronto. Inspired from Canadian events in Toronto, he returned the USA, to New York and organized the first American “labor day” on September 5 of the same year.

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.[1] In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the US military and US Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.

Labor Day zoals we het nu vieren!
