Mocht ik vorige week verslag doen van Standard & Poor’s besluit om de V.S. van AAA naar AA+ af te waarderen (ofschoon bij die andere AA dat plusje wat anders betekent), gisteren is er bij beoordelinsinstituut Moody’s van binnenuit iemand gaan kotsen.

A former senior analyst at Moody’s has gone public with his story of how one of the country’s most important rating agencies is corrupted to the core.

The analyst, William J. Harrington, worked for Moody’s for 11 years, from 1999 until his resignation last year.

From 2006 to 2010, Harrington was a Senior Vice President in the derivative products group, which was responsible for producing many of the disastrous ratings Moody’s issued during the housing bubble.

Harrington has made his story public in the form of a 78-page "comment" to the SEC’s proposed rules about rating agency reform, which he submitted to the agency on August 8th. The comment is a scathing indictment of Moody’s processes, conflicts of interests, and management, and it will likely make Harrington a star witness at any future litigation or hearings on this topic.

The primary conflict of interest at Moody’s is well known: The company is paid by the same "issuers" (banks and companies) whose securities it is supposed to objectively rate. This conflict pervades every aspect of Moody’s operations, Harrington says. It incentivizes everyone at the company, including analysts, to give Moody’s clients the ratings they want, lest the clients fire Moody’s and take their business to other ratings agencies.

Moody’s analysts whose conclusions prevent Moody’s clients from getting what they want, Harrington says, are viewed as "impeding deals" and, thus, harming Moody’s business. These analysts are often transferred, disciplined, "harassed," or fired.

Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the country, wants to pay more taxes and thinks his super-rich friends should too.

Buffett, who is estimated to be worth more than $47 billion, called on Congress to commit to "shared sacrifice" and raise taxes on people earning more than $1 million. Buffett said the rich are "coddled" by Congress "as if we were spotted owls or some other endangered species."

"While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks," Buffett wrote in a Sunday New York Times Op-ed.

Kijk, dat zijn de ‘good feel’ verhalen die we nodig hebben; zijn het geen bloedbaden op de beurzen waar we mee te maken hebben, dan zijn het wel bloedbaden in Pakistan of Afghanistan. Where is the love?

We worden overspoeld door inhaligheid, of het nu olie, goud of andere kostbaarheden betreft, we worden gemanipuleerd, dat bewijzen de feiten over ‘onafhankelijke’ instituten als Moody’s en Standard en Poor’s wel. Of de huizenmarkt, waar mensen die absoluut niet gequalificeerd waren om een huis te kopen toch toegelaten werden. Het motto: prijzen gaan toch omhoog en als ze niet meer kunnen betalen, dan onteigenen we ze weer. Maar dat ging goed fout, that backfired, zoals ze hier zeggen, oftewel een koekje van eigen deeg. Kortom; laat het maar even uitzieken, want gelijk de natuur heeft dit z’n eigen tijd nodig.

Het is overigens een tijd geleden dat ik zoooooooooo serieus was. Moet dus iets zijn wat er uit moest, immers de zon schijnt, we gaan weer lekker voetballen met de boys en er komt een bergje leuke delegaties op ons af. Eigenlijk een soort opruiming dus; een last van je schouders halen en die zonneschijn er op laten komen.
